Frequently Asked Questions

Products

How do I clean and care for my fixtures?

Care instructions for all of our finishes and materials can be found here.

In general, gentle dusting with a dry microfiber cloth will suffice for everyday cleaning. Do not use abrasives or harsh chemicals on any finishes.

Are bulbs included?

Yes, bulbs are included.

We include light bulbs with a color temperature of 2700K which is similar to the warm glow of incandescent light bulbs. If you would prefer a slightly cooler color temperature of 3000K, you may order these bulbs separately.

What does "UL Listed" mean?

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a company that tests and certifies electrical and electronic products against rigorous safety requirements. When a product has been tested and certified by UL, it is deemed "UL Listed". UL Listed lighting is sometimes required for residential projects and almost always required for commercial projects in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

As a rule, we always construct fixtures to UL standards whether or not they are formally UL Listed.

What does "OAH" mean?

OAH refers to the overall height of a light fixture that is suspended from the ceiling. OAH is measured from the finished ceiling surface to the bottom of the hanging fixture and includes any protruding light bulbs or shades.

Can you go into more detail about mounting requirements?

Mounting requirements for fixtures need to be known and specified at the time of electrical rough-in. We design our fixtures to use one of two US standard electrical boxes/mounts:

  1. Universal. This uses a fixture mounting box with a universal strap.
  2. Single gang electrical box. Depending on the fixture's orientation, this may need to be installed horizontally or vertically.

The mounting requirement for each fixture is listed in its product specifications.

Can you go into more detail about your metal finishes?

Each metal finish we use is unique in how it develops a patina over time (or not). Read more below to determine which metal finish is best for you and your project.

Brass:

All of our brass finishes are unlacquered, which means that the brass color will slowly build a rich patina over time. Some refer to this as a "living finish". We choose to slow down this aging process by hand-finishing all brass with a museum-grade hard wax. Unlacquered/living brass finishes will react with hand oils and will show fingerprints and repetitive wear. For this reason we highly recommend installing all brass fixtures and components while wearing the gloves that are included with your purchase. Refer to our care instructions for more information.

We offer a more durable lacquered finish for brass components as an alteration option for our light fixtures. When lacquered, brass remains relatively the same color indefinitely and will not develop any patina.

Steel:

All of our steel components are hand-blackened and sealed. The resulting color is a lustrous black that offers greater depth than processes like powder coating or painting. Blackened steel does not patina like brass, but it may experience some tonal shifting with time.

Our blackened steel finish is durable under normal wear and tear and will not react with hand oils, but it may not be the most suitable material for especially wet or corrosive environments.

Can you go into more detail about bulb specifications?

We exclusively source high quality, American-made bulbs for all of our light fixtures.

Bulb/base type: As a default we use G8 bi-pin bulbs which have an 8mm spread between pins and offer an efficient use of space for both bulb and socket.

Color temperature: This is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the number, the warmer the color of light. As a default we include 2700K bulbs with each fixture, which mimics the warm glow of incandescent light. If you would prefer a slightly cooler color temperature of 3000K, you may order these bulbs separately.

CRI: Color Rendering Index, measured from 0-100. The higher the number, the more accurately colors are rendered in the light. As a default we utilize bulbs with a CRI of 90 or greater.

Do you offer low voltage fixtures?

We offer low voltage as an alteration option for most of our light fixtures.

The term "low voltage" is used to describe a particular type of light fixture that cannot be wired directly into 120V power without a separate driver and/or transformer. These fixtures need special LED bulbs.

As a default our fixtures use standard LED bulbs that are standalone low voltage devices with built-in drivers/transformers. Unless noted otherwise, our fixtures are designed to be wired into standard 120V power.

How do I customize a product from your collection and what alteration options are available?

Because all of our products are handmade in our workshop, we are able to tailor many aspects of our existing product collection to meet your needs.

Minor alterations include:

  • Gloss glass finish instead of matte
  • Some custom metal finishes, including lacquered brass
  • Some custom wood finishes
  • Some custom cord colors
  • Cord-hung ceiling fixtures instead of rod-hung
  • Adding switches/dimmers onto wall sconces

Major alterations include:

Where can I see your fixtures in person?

We have samples of each of our light fixtures at our workshop in Seattle, WA, USA. Visits are available by appointment only.

Online Orders

What is the lead time for fixtures?

All of our fixtures are made by hand and to order, which takes time. Your fixture(s) will enter our production queue as soon as your order is placed.

Each fixture's estimated lead time is listed on its product page, but we may ship sooner or later depending how many orders are in our queue. In any case, we will keep you updated on the status of your order.

If you place an order for multiple fixtures with vastly different lead times, we will contact you to ask if you would prefer that they ship separately or together.

How do I place a rush order?

Rush orders take priority in our production queue and ship out much more quickly than our estimated lead time.

Can I pay via ACH / Electronic Check?

When placing an order online, you can select "ACH / Electronic Check" as a payment option at checkout. When you select this option, we will follow up with specific payment instructions shortly after we receive your order.

Your order will enter our production queue after your ACH payment has cleared, typically 1-3 business days.

Shipping & Returns

How does shipping work?

When your fixture(s) are completed, we will ship them to you via standard ground shipping and provide you with a tracking number. If you would prefer expedited shipping or to handle shipping through your own account, please let us know when you place your order and we will coordinate this with you directly.

Exceptionally large or heavy orders will need to ship via freight on shipping pallets. For these orders, you will be charged a minimum freight fee at checkout. This cost may need to be adjusted based on the specifics of your timeline and delivery needs.

What if a product arrives damaged?

All of our fixtures are tested prior to shipment, but we highly encourage you to inspect the contents of your order immediately upon receipt to verify no damage has occurred in transit.

To replace a damaged product, you must email us at hello@moonmoonlighting.co within 14 days of receipt with clear photographs showing the damaged item, clear photographs showing the condition of the packaging, and a written description of the damage. Once we have adequate documentation to file a claim, we will email you a prepaid shipping label so you can mail the damaged product back to us. Commissioned Work

What is commissioned work?

"Commissioned work" refers to fully custom light fixtures that Moon Moon designs and constructs specifically for you and your project.

What types of light fixtures can be commissioned?

Moon Moon designs and constructs sconces, pendants, flush mount ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, table lamps, and floor lamps. Commissioned light fixtures can be hardwired or plug-in and can be fitted with most standard bulb types, but we prefer to utilize LED bulbs with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI).

Our material library includes brass, steel, aluminum, wood, and glass, but we are able to explore other materials and methods if budget and timeline allow.

We produce all of our light fixtures to UL safety standards and US electrical/voltage standards, but official UL listing may incur additional cost depending on the fixture design. If you require UL listing, this will be included in the total project cost.

Our design process ensures that all light fixtures uniquely suit your needs. Aesthetically, we maintain a warm, minimal feel with our work. We may also invite more depth into the work by collaborating with specific material artists if we believe it's in the best interest of the design.

What is the process for commissioning fully custom light fixtures?

After you send us an inquiry, we'll schedule an initial meeting to learn more about you and your project so we have enough context to begin schematic design work.

We'll then spend some time designing light fixtures that respond to your design prompt, and we'll present you with our favorite options. You'll choose the design direction you prefer, and we'll spend more time refining your fixtures. We often need one or two more meetings with you to reach a level of detail that we consider production-ready.

The production timeline depends on design complexity and materials, but we'll keep you updated with major milestones as we move toward completion.

When your pieces are complete, we'll ship them to you and remain available to answer any questions that may arise during installation.

How much does commissioned work cost?

Your project budget will inform our design choices. We will not deviate from your stated budget.

We require a $1,500 deposit before we begin schematic design work. After you select your preferred design direction, we'll provide you with a total project cost and payment schedule. We require 75% of the total project cost to be paid before production starts and the remaining balance reconciled before we release the shipment. All payments are nonrefundable.

Certain design strategies are reliably more or less expensive, and we leverage these to deliver the highest quality product for your project budget.

Generally less expensive per fixture:

  • A large order quantity of one custom fixture
  • Single light source per fixture
  • Utilizing materials, finishes, profiles, and components already within our studio library
  • Average fixture sizes

Generally more expensive per fixture:

  • A suite of unique custom fixtures
  • Multiple light sources per fixture
  • Utilizing materials, finishes, profiles, and components outside of our studio library
  • Experimental materials and methods
  • Extra large or extra small fixture sizes
  • Highly simplified designs
  • Fixtures that require wet rating
  • Atypical fixtures that require UL listing

Philosophy

What materials do you use?

We construct all of our fixtures with solid, enduring materials like brass, steel, wood, and glass. With proper care and maintenance our fixtures will last a lifetime, probably more.

Besides certain electrical components, we specifically avoid using materials like plastics, polyethylene, and Styrofoam/polystyrene in all of our fixtures and packaging.

Where are your fixtures made?

All our fixtures are designed and constructed in our workshop in Seattle, WA, USA.

We produce as much as we can in-house, but some details require additional expertise. For these we work with craftspeople and artisans to ensure that every component meets our standards of quality, durability, and refinement.

We keep our network as local as possible  several of our collaborators are within walking distance of our workshop.

Are your fixtures repairable?

We are proud to offer fixtures that are repairable. This means that if one day your fixture needs repair, you will be able to replace one piece of the assembly rather than replacing the entire light fixture. We strongly prefer this approach for the sake of fixture longevity and, of course, a lighter carbon footprint.

This is a philosophy we hold close to our hearts and it requires substantially more design time upfront. We believe it's worth the effort for beautiful fixtures that will last.

Why "Moon Moon"?

The moon is so nice we chose it twice.
